American Commercial Lines Named to EPA's National Environmental Performance Track Program

Posted on: Thursday, 24 April 2008, 12:00 CDT

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind., April 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Commercial Lines Inc. ("ACL" or the "Company") announced today that its Transportation Services Division has been named as one of 42 new members of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Environmental Performance Track program. Membership is awarded to private and public facilities that have a strong record of environmental compliance, set three-year goals for continuous improvements in environmental performance beyond their legal requirements, have internal systems in place to manage their environmental impacts, engage in community outreach, and consistently report results. ACL is the first marine transportation company to obtain membership in the program.

The Performance Track program was launched by the EPA in June 2000 and has since grown to 538 members from a wide range of business sectors in 49 states and Puerto Rico. Members have set more than 3,500 goals to benefit the environment in both regulated and unregulated areas. Results reported by members include a reduction of use of hazardous materials by nearly 18,000 tons, a reduction in solid waste of 176,000 tons, and energy savings sufficient to power approximately 30,000 households.

"Performance Track facilities represent a new generation of environmental leaders who have the vision to embrace the strategies that will protect the environment for generations to come," Dan Fiorino, Director of the EPA's Performance Incentives Division, said. Individual facilities apply for membership in the Performance Track program, and companies may have multiple facilities in the program.

The EPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management reviewed ACL's application for the Performance Track program and verified the company's compliance with environmental regulations. ACL demonstrates its commitment to exceeding regulatory compliance through voluntary participation in the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care(R) Management System and The American Waterways Operators' Responsible Carrier Program. ACL is also a charter member of Indiana's Environmental Stewardship Program and Kentucky's Excel Program. All of these voluntary programs measure performance and entail periodic independent third party assessment.

"We are delighted to be members of Performance Track," Sam George, ACL's Vice President of Environmental Compliance, said. "The program is the 'Crown Jewel' of voluntary environmental programs. We remain committed to operating beyond regulatory compliance and serving as an industry leader in responsible environmental performance. We are proud to be recognized for environmental excellence and strive to motivate others to exceed regulatory requirements."

The EPA will welcome ACL and 41 other new members to the program at the annual Performance Track Awards Dinner on May 21, 2008 at the Environmental Partnership Summit in Baltimore, MD.
