Half Price Books Awards $25,000 to Natural Resources Defense Council

Posted on: Monday, 28 April 2008, 12:00 CDT

Half Price Books, through its BecomeGreen.org environmental educational initiative, announced today the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) will receive the company's first $25,000 award for promoting conservation and preserving the environment. NRDC is one of the nation's most effective environmental action groups, and one of the world's strongest environmental advocacy organizations.

The NRDC was chosen to receive the grant by public vote through the company's website, halfpricebooks.com, from a slate of candidates nominated by Half Price Books employees. Since opening its first store in 1972, Half Price Books has been environmentally conscious: Environmentalists Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson founded the company to keep good, usable books in circulation rather than ending up in a landfill.

In accepting the grant, NRDC President Frances Beinecke said, "This grant will help us strengthen our message to promote a healthier Earth through each individual's everyday actions. Our SimpleSteps.org initiative educates people about the steps they can take to promote a healthier planet, a healthier home, and a healthier self.

"In addition, Half Price Books funds will also support the NRDC's Partnership for the Earth Campaign that is striving to protect both the environment and human health for generations to come," Beinecke said.

The grant was funded through a Half Price Books project to encourage shoppers to refuse a plastic bag--or bring their own reusable bag--for their purchases. "Each of our 100 stores in 15 states sets aside five cents for every bagless transaction," said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president of Half Price Books. "The money is designated for environmental charities.

"Our goal was to convince one million people to say 'no' to a plastic bag during 2008 to illustrate how this one simple action helps protect our environment," Doyle Thomas added. "You can imagine our delight when we reached our one-millionth transaction eight months ahead of schedule, enabling us to make this significant contribution to the NRDC in commemoration of Earth Day 2008."
