PUPILS from a Redcar school will travel to Africa to help change lives.

In September, 12 teenagers from Redcar Community College are to join a community project in Uganda.

The Kirkleatham Lane school wants to help the Tree Shade nursery and primary school in the capital, Kampala.

At Tree Shade pupils must wait for a monthly delivery of wood before they can cook up basic meals in a corrugated iron shed.

The Redcar college wants to raise enough money to buy Tree Shade a solid fuel stove.

The students will also do an arts project, make a film and help build and decorate classrooms.

The trip follows a fact-finding mission by the college’s deputy head, Steve Siddell, and colleague Stephen Bunn.

The link-up has been promoted through links with the charity New Beginnings, founded by ex-Marske man Chris Donnison and his wife Sarah. Mr Siddell said the trip will have a profound effect on the students.
