Posted on: Tuesday, 22 March 2005, 15:00 CST

Public education's role in a free society is the focus of events beginning tonight at William Paterson University.

Organized by the university's American Democracy Project, lectures and performances will emphasize the importance of public elementary, secondary and higher education in encouraging civic- mindedness.

The American Democracy Project is part of an effort by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities to raise civic awareness among college students. The series is part of the university's 150th anniversary celebration this year.

The following events are free and open to the public.

* "Honoring Commitment: Performance, Poetry, Politics" will be held tonight at 6 in the university's Power Arts Building on Power Avenue, off Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne.

Featured will be a performance by Northstar Navigators, a children's Latin and African drumming troupe, and award-winning poet Sonia Sanchez, who will read from her works. David Sciarra will speak. He's the executive director of the non-profit Education Law Center that initiated the Abbott v. Burke lawsuit seeking equal funding for poor and urban school districts in the state. The American Democracy Project will give civic engagement awards to educators and students from William Paterson and the community.

* A program of lectures and student presentations, "The Public Education Roots of William Paterson University: The Mission Continues," will be held Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the Martini Teleconference Center in Hobart Hall.

Christine Kelly, assistant professor of political science and director of the American Democracy Project, will discuss the politics of public education. Djanna Hill, assistant professor of secondary and middle school education, will talk about the history of teacher education at William Paterson. Students in the university's Paterson Teachers for Tomorrow project will present portions of oral histories gathered from retired Paterson teachers.

* Author Adolph Reed Jr., a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a lecture titled "Access, Higher Education and Democracy: Why Not Free Public Higher Education?" on March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium.
