How Far We’Ve Come
Before 2003, the only recycling that was available to the general public in Southland was glass recycling.
So it is fair to say that in the past five years waste minimisation has come along in leaps and bounds. Our progress includes: wKerbside recycling was implemented in 2003 in Invercargill city and Bluff.
Since then, Southland Enterprise report they have processed 6415 tonnes of recyclables.
wSouthland residents have recycled 16,762 cubic metres of material since recycling began — that’s enough to fill 296 40-foot containers.
wRecycling centres are available in a number of rural areas throughout Southland — Lumsden, Manapouri, Mokotua, Mossburn, Otautau, Riverton, Oban, Te Anau, Winton, Wyndale wRecycling is also available at Waste Transfer Stations in Invercargill, Gore, Otautau, Riverton, Oban, Te Anau, Winton and Wyndale.
wIn 2003, a modern engineered landfill was opened in Southland.
This landfill helps to protect the environment from the negative impacts of residual waste.
wCouncils are now actively investigating the feasibility of systems to further reduce waste, such as collections for compostables, such as food scraps and garden waste.
