California officials said salmon fishing in the Central Valley will be limited this year to a small stretch of the Sacramento River.

New rules adopted Friday by the California Fish and Game Commission are designed to protect fall-run Chinook, which are expected to be at a record low this year, the Sacramento Bee reported. All ocean fishing for Chinook salmon has been halted in California this year but the state will allow limited recreational fishery on the Sacramento River between the Red Bluff Diversion Dam and Knight’s Landing.

The agency said the decision to allow limited fishing was made to support the local recreational economy, the newspaper said.
