Elizabeth Marincola Named President of Science Service, Publisher of Science News

Posted on: Wednesday, 23 March 2005, 18:00 CST

WASHINGTON, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Elizabeth Marincola has been named President of Science Service and Publisher of Science News. She succeeds Donald Harless, who last year announced his intention to retire in 2005. Marincola has been Executive Director of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) since 1991.

Dudley Herschbach, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Science Service, announced the appointment today. "We are delighted to have Elizabeth Marincola lead our devoted staff and volunteers in our mission to enhance science education and the public understanding of science," Herschbach said.

Marincola has been both a persuasive advocate for science and an effective leader of the ASCB. She has served as the Executive Director of the Joint Steering Committee for Public Policy, which promotes funding for biological sciences. In accepting her appointment at Science Service, Marincola said, "It's a great honor to have been asked to help lead Science Service in the next era. It is an organization of great leadership, rich resources and a long, impressive history. I hope to apply to this new challenge at Science Service some of the wisdom of the many inspiring people with whom I have had the privilege to work at the ASCB. Our Nation needs strong advocacy for science and investment in science literacy more than ever."

Science Service is a nonprofit organization with a mission to advance the understanding and appreciation of science through publications and educational programs. Science Service publishes Science News, a weekly magazine of science, and operates Science News for Kids, a popular website for middle school science students. Science Service also administers three of the premier science competitions in the country -- the Intel Science Talent Search, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, and the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge.
