Forum, Workshops Helpful

Sir, Forest and Bird congratulates the Tasman District Council for holding the excellent forum and workshops on restoring wetlands, last week.
The sessions were well attended and there appears to be wide public interest in the preservation and improvement of our extensive estuarine environment.
In view of this we are concerned that the council appears to be planning for an animal rescue centre to be built near the margins of the Waimea Estuary in the Sandeman Reserve, catering for dogs, cats and horses.
There has been no notification nor public input into this, yet glossy leaflets are being distributed suggesting it is a fait accompli.
Would the council please inform us all exactly what is going on here as Forest and Bird does not think the activity is suitable for a site so close to wildlife habitat.
The SPCA does an admirable job rescuing and rehabilitating animals. Is this new organisation going to compete with the SPCA for funding and volunteer support?
It would seem more efficient for the two organisations to work together on a more suitable site than the estuary margins.
