NEW ORLEANS, May 13 /PRNewswire/ --

Who: The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice at Dillard University What: Race, Place and the Environment after Katrina: Reclaiming, Rebuilding, Revitalizing Where: JW Marriott Hotel, 614 Canal St., New Orleans When: May 15 - 17, 2008

The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice will host a four-day symposium that will examine how the Gulf Coast is progressing post-Hurricane Katrina and discuss ways in which to keep moving forward to total recovery. The symposium, according to Executive Director Dr. Beverly Wright, will focus on the extent to which communities in the Gulf Coast have been able to replace infrastructure, obtain loans, locate permanent housing and rebuild neighborhoods, institutions and businesses in a safe and sustainable way. Efforts by local, state federal agencies and private businesses will be discussed in addition to what communities are doing to reclaim, rebuild and revitalize their neighborhoods.

Some of the topics and issues to be addressed during the symposium include:

With more than 20 illegal dumping sites in New Orleans East alone, participants will find out about innovative ways to deal with this type of waste that is pro-environment.

What are the impacts and responses to climate change from a number of perspectives including public health and HBCUs?

The response to global warming is opening a new workforce avenue. Participants will find out about career opportunities in "green."

A report card on the recovery process will be revealed by the Center for Social Inclusion.

There will be a look at the state of education post Katrina.

Surviving Katrina will focus on a number of issues including, the effect of race and class on those who are trying to return to New Orleans, environmental justice and how these vulnerable coastal communities can protect themselves from other Katrina-like events.

The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice at Dillard University provides opportunities for communities, scientific researchers and decision makers to collaborate on programs and projects that promote the rights of all people to be free from environmental harm as it impacts health, jobs, housing, education and general quality of life.
