EDMONTON - Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are giving crews a leg-up on forest and brush fires burning in Alberta.
Officials say more than 150 firefighters, including two teams from British Columbia, are making headway on the fire that is threatening the hamlet of Newbrook north of Edmonton.
But an evacuation order remains in effect and part of Highway 63 remains closed as co-ordinators wait to see what kind of weather they will be dealing with Sunday, especially the wind.
Rob Harris, an Alberta wildfire officer, says forest fires in remote areas near Slave Lake and Whitecourt are now listed as being held, while one fire near Manning remains out of control.
In southern Manitoba, officials are still worried about high winds as crews and water bombers battle forest and brush fires.
Environment Canada issued wind warnings for much of southern Manitoba overnight.
