Creation Theory

CREATIONISTS keep telling us that evolution is in trouble (Kerry Sharp, Letters March 17) and asking that their theory be taken seriously, as a scientific alternative to Darwinism.
Well, allow me to let you in on a secret: there is no such thing as Creation Theory.
No creationist has ever submitted a formal scientific research paper on this idea to any respectable journal.
They prefer to bypass peer-reviewed publication and take their case directly to the ignorant, the gullible, politicians and worst of all, schoolchildren.
We now have the ridiculous situation in some parts of the USA where these ideas are taught as an alternative to real science, one which I fear, may be coming to a school near you soon, unless politicians face up to their responsibilities and guard us from this appalling nonsense being taught in schools here.
A favourite trick of creationists is to take well-established theories like the second law of thermodynamics, which are difficult for the average person to understand, and construct arguments using them that appear to support their ideas.
Creationists want us to discredit thousands of peer-reviewed pieces of science built up over the last hundred years or so on the basis of a few faked or dishonest examples that have been brought to the public arena.
Imagine the news if we read the headline "Bacteria become resistant to penicillin, creation theory now in doubt".
Real theories do several things, they explain real phenomena and make predictions that can be tested.
Creation theory does none of these things and belongs in the pile with astrology, witchcraft and fairies at the bottom of the garden.
In fact I challenge any creationist writing in the Manawatu Standard to set forth their ideas here and I will refute them with real science.
