Finnish president urges to protect Baltic Sea
HELSINKI, May 15 (Xinhua) — Finnish President Tarja Halonen urged on Thursday countries of the Baltic Sea region to take action at once to protect the sea, according to Finnish news agency STT.
“Having made the commitment, one must take action now. We have no time for procrastination,” she said at the Central Chamber of Commerce.
The president pointed out that the goal of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission was to restore the “good ecological status” of the Baltic marine environment by 2012.
Halonen also said that Finland bore a special responsibility in persuading Russia to join efforts to protect the Baltic Sea.
