EDMONTON - After days of hard work tired fire crews are smiling at word that the flames threatening an Alberta community are under control and residents will be allowed to return to their homes.
Up to 150 residents of Newbrook will be heading back home this afternoon after being evacuated on Friday. Candace Revega of the County of Thorhild says the hamlet north of Edmonton is now completely shielded by a firebreak barrier.
Temperatures have cooled, the humidity is up, winds are calm and there is rain in the forecast.
Revega says while fire crews and volunteers are pleased, the community isn't letting its guard down yet.
Crews remain on the line putting out hotspots, part of Highway 63 remains closed and Newbrook residents who return home must be ready to flee again if the flames whip up.
