EU Lawmakers to Approve Environmental Law

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 May 2008, 00:00 CDT

Seriously damaging the environment will soon be a crime in the European Union, under a plan agreed upon by the bloc's institutions.

Members of the European Parliament are expected Wednesday to give their blessing to a report by German conservative Hartmut Nassauer, which calls for effective, proportionate and dissuasive criminal sanctions for several environmental crimes, the EU Observer reported Tuesday.

Among the offenses to be sanctioned: radioactive emissions; the production, storage and transport of nuclear materials; the possession or killing of protected fauna and flora species; the deterioration of a habitat within a protected site; and the manufacture and distribution of ozone-depleting substances.

The EU Parliament, the European Commission and the EU Council, representing member states, have supported the draft law.

With this compromise, everybody knows which environmental offenses can lead to criminal law consequences, Nassauer said.
