Decapitated Seals Find Prompts Ban Call

TWO headless common seal corpses have been found close to a salmon farm at Kyle of Lochalsh.

The discovery has prompted animal welfare and wildlife tourism organisations to call for the Scottish Government to end the killing of seals in Scottish waters.

The decapitated corpses, one thought to have been a heavily pregnant female and the other a juvenile, were discovered last week by a wildlife tourism operator.

It is thought that the animals’ heads might have been removed either to hide the fact that the wrong calibre of gun was used or to try to hide the fact that they were shot at all.

The bodies were found close to Sron Salmon farm, based in the Lochalsh Marine Area of Conservation and operated by Marine Harvest. Nigel Smith, who runs a wildlife tourism company, Sea Probe Atlantis, found the seals. Police have been informed. The Scottish Parliament is to debate wildlife crime tomorrow.
