Homemade Paradise Beach Lover Brings in Sand to Create His Unique Home

Mike Stacy loves beaches. In fact, he lives on the only beach in downtown Augusta.

“We just got a dumptruck load of sand brought in, dumped it over the edge and spread it out,” he said. “It turned out great.”

Mr. Stacy manages the city marinas and marina warehouse, and lives just a stone’s throw from his office – in a houseboat on the Savannah River.

“When we first took over the warehouse, it was a requirement to have on-site management,” he said. “I could have lived in the warehouse, but I decided to just go with a houseboat.”

His home, the 40-foot Savannah I, is moored adjacent to his beach.

“The boat has everything you could need,” he said. “Stove, refrigerator, air conditioning – even a hot tub.”

Enjoying his beach, complete with a vintage boat hull turned sideways to make a Gilligan’s Island-looking tiki hut, is one of the perks of managing a riverfront business, he said.

“Far as I can tell, it’s the only beach in Augusta,” he said, adding that he hopes the city will someday follow his lead and develop similar areas for the community.

“It would be great if we could get a nice beach right downtown, over here on Riverwalk,” he said. “It would be great. People could lay out on it and have picnics.”
