Checketts Got a ‘Real’ Deal

I was amazed to read that Dave Checketts, owner of Real Salt Lake, is one of the several prominent people of “wealth” who contributed to the success of Peterson Partners’ latest venture capital fund (May 20). As I recall, he spent a few sessions asking for — and receiving — taxpayer money from the Legislature to help fund Real Salt Lake in some ways. One of his arguments was that his venture needed government money in order to succeed. I think he made this pitch one year when the Legislature decided it didn’t have enough money to fund dental and eye care for low-income Utahns. It appears to me he truly got a “Real” deal.
