A South Carolina couple is facing criminal charges after a truck leaked electroplating waste on 13 miles of road in Spartanburg County, officials say.
Lyman residents Marvin W. Brown, 41, and Barbara Ann Brown, 35, are each facing a charge of going against South Carolina's Pollution Control Act and Hazardous Waste Management Act, GreenvilleOnline.com reported Wednesday.
Officials said they are also each charged with two counts of conspiracy.
Department of Health and Environmental Control officials said people could be burned if they touch the reddish chemical, which may have been spilled early Tuesday, WHNS-TV in Greenville, S.C. reported.
Thom Berry, a department spokesman, said children and pets should be kept at a distance from the substance as officials work to get it cleaned up.
Berry said the couple was being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
