OTTAWA - The troubled forestry industry wants fast action on a committee's recommendations that would raise Canada's status as a sustainable source of international wood products.
The Commons natural resources committee is calling for tax measures to increase research and development and more efforts to identify new markets and products.
The industry, which has spent months battling a high dollar, an unstable U.S economy, and changes in both the lumber and paper sectors, agrees strongly with the committee's ideas.
The committee is also asking the government to consider the industry's record of lowering its greenhouse gas emissions when developing new environmental regulations.
Forestry experts say the recommendations are important for their industry's growth and survival.
