Staff at South East Cornwall’s Cotehele Estate will launch a hi- tech accelerated composter that recycles household waste.

The team is launching the waste-to-compost project at the National Trust attraction, in St Dominick, near Saltash, at 1pm today.

The Rocket, an accelerated composter, turns kitchen waste, paper, cardboard and wood chip into compost in 14 days. The project has been financially supported by partnership with the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and Defra.

Students from Lipson Community College in Plymouth and local textile artist Jo Tyler took part in an art project to design a cover for the Rocket, telling the story of composting.

It will be on display in Cotehele plant sales department and the Lipson pupils will also be present at the launch.

Nick Stokes, Cotehele’s learning officer, said: "This has been a fantastic opportunity for Cotehele to work with a local community college. We are really pleased to share the story of composting and raise awareness of this important environmental issue."
