HALEDON Bayer Corp., the aspirin conglomerate, has agreed to pay $1 million to New Jersey for polluting groundwater at a former dye plant at Belmont Avenue and Hoxsey Place.

The settlement is the second largest in the last two years under the Department of Environmental Protection’s natural-resource damage program. The DEP hasn’t decided what to do with the money, but it will go toward restoring or enhancing natural areas nearby.

In addition, Bayer is paying for the cleanup of the site, including extracting volatile chemical vapors from soil, groundwater treatment and capping portions of the site to prevent rainwater from becoming contaminated, DEP officials said.
