New Food Lion to Roar Near Sun City Gates

June 18, 2008

Jun. 18–Sun City Hilton Head residents soon will be able to buy groceries without hopping on U.S. 278 and heading toward Bluffton.

In fact, they will be able to drive their golf carts to the new Food Lion store that will open just outside the community’s gates next Wednesday.

The North Carolina-based chain will open its third area store — a 35,000-square foot shop — at 8 a.m. June 25.

It will have an organic food section, 60 percent more wine than the average Food Lion and DVD rentals for $1.

The shelves also will be 66 inches high as opposed to the standard 72 inches, said Karen Peterson, spokeswoman for Food Lion. “This allows for an easier and safer reach for products,” she said.

About 60 people will work at the store at 210 Okatie Village Drive near the Bluffton-Okatie Outpatient Center. The company also has a newly renovated store in Kittie’s

Crossing in Bluffton and one in Crossroads Shopping Center off Palmetto Bay Road on Hilton Head Island.

Currently, most Sun City residents are either “very fond of Publix” or “very fond of Kroger,” said Bob Hooper, former president of the Sun City Community Association board of directors.

But, “everyone is looking forward to the fact that it’s so close to Sun City,” Hooper said. “That’s extra important in this day of high gas prices.”

Ross Glatzer, a neighborhood representative who was on a committee of residents who worked with the grocer, said Food Lion was “very bullish about trying to support the needs of Sun City residents.”

An update meeting by the grocer in May drew about 750 people, Glatzer said.

The grand opening next Wednesday will include a health and wellness event and give-aways for customers.

Food Lion is a subsidiary of Belgium-based Delhaize Group. Food Lion has roughly 1,300 supermarkets under the names Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harveys and Reid’s in 11 Southeastern and mid-Atlantic states.
