Disabled Boat Towed Home
A disabled fishing boat was towed back to New Bedford yesterday after an engine room fire left the boat adrift about 20 miles off Block Island, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard received a distress call from the 70-foot Whileaway at about 9:15 a.m. and responded with a helicopter and two boats.
Coast Guard crews stood by until a Whileaway sister ship arrived to tow the boat back to New Bedford. No one was injured, thanks in large part to the Whileaway crew’s use of a carbon dioxide fire- extinguishing system, said Ensign Colin McKee, a Coast Guard search and rescue controller.
