American Commercial Lines Named By the U.S. Coast Guard As a Recipient of the William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Protection Award

Posted on: Wednesday, 2 July 2008, 12:00 CDT

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind., July 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Commercial Lines Inc. ("ACL" or the "Company") announced today that it was awarded the William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Protection Award by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Benkert Award recognizes outstanding achievements in marine environmental protection. The award was created to increase public awareness of the importance of protecting the marine environment, encourage adherence to the international environmental management system protocol, encourage environmental innovations in industrial activities, and provide a means for sharing successful methods and techniques.

Marine transportation organizations are eligible to apply for the Benkert Award, which is presented every other year. Depending upon their size and business segment, applicants must meet certain criteria, including environmental policies, objectives, and targets; pollution prevention; safety management; environmental outreach; partnerships; and performance measurement and results. There are three levels of recognition: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. ACL has been recognized at the Silver level. Of this year's applicants, three were recognized at the gold level, three at the silver level, and three at the bronze level, while two were given an honorable mention.

"This is a tremendous honor. The Benkert Award is the most prestigious and highly sought after award in the maritime industry," Sam George, Vice President Environmental Compliance for ACL, said. "This recognition confirms ACL's long-standing commitment to excellence in environmental stewardship and underscores our primary core value of never compromising the safety of people or the environment."

In April 2008, ACL's Transportation Services Division was named as a member of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Performance Track Program. ACL demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship and safe handling through voluntary participation in the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care(R) Management System and The American Waterways Operators' Responsible Carrier Program. The company is also a charter member of Indiana's Environmental Stewardship Program and Kentucky's Excel Program. All of these voluntary programs measure performance and entail periodic independent third party assessment.

American Commercial Lines Inc., headquartered in Jeffersonville, Indiana, is an integrated marine transportation and service company operating in the United States Jones Act trades, with approximately $1 billion in revenues and approximately 3,300 employees as of December 31, 2007.
