Beautification – Volunteers, Retirees Join for Cleanup
By Don Hibbits
The Great American Clean-up continues in Horn Lake.
Jennifer Pendergrast (Bank Plus), Francis Miller, (Miller Christmas Trees, LLC), Mark Brown (Horn Lake fire inspector) and Paige Pendergrast joined forces with the residents of Southern Pines Retirement Community in its annual effort to spruce up the neighborhood.
According to Penny McIntosh, manager of Southern Pines, this has been an annual event within the community for the past 13 years. She and the residents welcomed the help that was provided this year and look forward to even more help in the future.
All of the residents are at least 65 years old and many are in their 80s.
Jennifer Pendergrast chairs the Keep Horn Lake Beautiful Committee and she stated a desire for her committee to get behind this event with a stronger commitment in the future. The small number of volunteers did not dampen the spirits of the workers or residents. The order of the day was to clean out all the flower beds, remove grass and weeds and replace them with flowering plants and mulch.
The workers and residents enjoyed a luncheon buffet in the community center. The food was donated by Shipley’s Donuts and Kroger. Ice tea was provided by Mrs. Winners. The lunch was served by a group of Horn Lake Girl Scouts.
Miller Christmas Trees donated hundreds of plants for the flower beds; Horn Lake Home Depot donated many bags of mulch and Paige, Jennifer, Mark, Francis and a small contingent of Little League Baseball players did the dirty work.
