Shymkent, 8 July: Uzbekistan has reduced the supply of water to Kazakhstan's part of the Dostyk canal in South Kazakhstan Region (SKR), the head of the Yugvodkhoz [south water industry] national state enterprise's department for the use of water, Aygul Omarova, told the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency today.
"As of today, 20 cu.m. [of water] per second is being supplied to the Dostyk canal, though 80 cu.m. per second should be supplied. The amount of water is so small that it is appropriate to say that the canal has practically been closed," Aygul Omarova said.
"Representatives from Uzbekistan have told us that water will not be supplied to people in Kazakhstan," Aygul Omarova explained.
At the same time, the head of the department for the use of water noted that she had "no information on the reason for this decision".
"Our management and the chairman of the committee for water resources of the Ministry of Agriculture, Anatoliy Ryabtsev, are now holding talks with the Uzbek side," Aygul Omarova said.
As is known, according to a protocol that was signed in mid-June by the Agriculture Ministry of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan, 80 cu.m. to 85 cu.m. of water per second should be supplied to Kazakhstan's part of the Dostyk canal in July and August.
South Kazakhstan Region has a population of over 2.2 million and is the country's main cotton growing region.
