Golden Gate University School of Law Selects Professor Alan Ramo As Acting Dean

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 July 2008, 12:00 CDT

Golden Gate University (GGU) School of Law today announces the appointment of Professor Alan Ramo as its new acting dean, effective August 1, 2008. Ramo previously served as director of the LLM Environmental Law Program and acting director of the JD Environmental Law Program. He succeeds former Dean Frederic White, who has served as dean since 2004.

Ramo was selected to serve as acting dean by his peers on the School of Law faculty and by GGU President Dr. Dan Angel and will serve in the position until the School of Law selects a permanent dean from a nationwide search.

"Given his long history with the Law School, Alan probably knows the place better than most," Angel said. "He has done excellent, award-winning work with the Environmental Law and Justice Clinic, and we expect he will demonstrate this same level of excellence in his work as acting dean."

Ramo has been a professor at the GGU School of Law since 1994 and directed the Environmental Law and Justice Clinic from that year through 2007. During his tenure at the Law School, he has served on several governmental advisory committees, including the San Francisco Health Summit Advisory Group, the California State Water Resources Control Board External Review's Water Resources Committee, and the Cal-EPA Comparative Risk Project's Environmental Justice Committee.

"The Law School thrives by training students to succeed as lawyers in business, governmental service and public interest work," said Ramo. "My appointment confirms the faculty's appreciation of the importance of integrating clinical work and practice skills into the traditional law school curriculum."

During the course of his career, Ramo and the Environmental Law and Justice Clinic have received several awards, including The Clinical Legal Education Association Award for Excellence in a Public Interest Case or Project, the Environment Now Foundation Wells Family Award in Urban Renewal, the EPA Region IX Earth Day Award, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Commendation, the Environmental Law Foundation Chappell Hayes Environmental Justice Award, and the ABA SONREEL Law Student Clinic Award.

Ramo holds a JD from the University of California Berkeley; a master of journalism from the University of California, Berkeley; and a bachelor of arts in political science from Stanford University.
