Posted on: Tuesday, 8 July 2008, 18:00 CDT

ARLINGTON, Va., July 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) announced Myron E. (Mike) Ullman III, Chairman and CEO of JCPenney, will be the keynote speaker at this year's Environmental Sustainability and Compliance Conference. The conference is set for September 22-24, 2008, at the Embassy Suites in Frisco, Texas.

"As one of the most respected retail executives today, Mike Ullman will bring tremendous insight and experience to this conference," said RILA President Sandy Kennedy. "RILA is excited to bring together leading voices and forward-thinking industry professionals to address an issue so critical to consumers and retail businesses."

This conference is the first to bring together retailers with manufacturers and service providers in a collaborative setting to discuss the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices throughout the enterprise. Speakers include representatives from leading retail and manufacturing companies including JCPenney, AutoZone, Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, IKEA, Limited Brands, Nike, REI, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

JCPenney has made notable strides in its sustainability efforts in recent years, having invested more than $100 million in energy management initiatives and upgrades to major energy-consuming assets, resulting in significant energy savings for its stores. In addition, JCPenney recycled more than 95,000 tons of cardboard and 13,500 tons of plastic in 2007 and was named an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for Energy Management for two consecutive years by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Recently, JCPenney launched Simply Green(TM), an exclusive JCPenney program that assists customers in making environmentally conscious purchases by labeling products that provide environmental benefits.

Ullman joined JCPenney in December 2004 and has more than 25 years of experience leading major retail businesses. During his career he has served as director general, group managing director for LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, chairman and CEO of DFS Group Limited, chairman and CEO of R.H. Macy & Co., Inc., managing director of Wharf Holdings, Ltd. in Hong Kong and executive vice president of the Federated Department Stores division in Dallas.

"The RILA Environmental Sustainability & Compliance Conference will help retailers incorporate environmental best practices into their organizations in a meaningful way, enhancing customer service, reducing costs, and complementing their business models," stated Casey Chroust, Senior Vice President of Retail Operations for RILA. "In addition, sessions focusing on environmental compliance will offer executives in that realm an essential forum to ensure they remain ahead of the curve on legal and regulatory compliance issues."

The RILA Environmental Sustainability Compliance Conference comes a year after the launch of the RILA Sustainability Initiative (http://www.rila.org/latest/rlRsi.aspx?section=Rsiabo) (RSI), a collaborative initiative launched to help leading retail companies meet environmental standards relevant to the retail industry and pursue responsible environmentally sustainable activities and business practices. RSI membership is open to both RILA members and non-RILA members.
