Presque Isle Beaches Close for Lack of Sand
Crews at Presque Isle State Park are closing two beaches because there’s not enough sand on them.
Beaches 9 and 10 will be closed Monday through Thursday for the next three weeks while crews replenish the sand that washes away. The crews will dump more than 19,000 tons of sand on the beaches.
The park typically replaces the sand on its beaches before Memorial Day. The project was delayed on these two beaches this year because officials thought some piping plover birds might nest in the area. The birds decided not to do that, however, so the work can begin.
