Positive Results in Curbing Illegal Logging

MEASURES taken to curb illegal logging have shown positive results, with

illegal encroachments dropping from 191 cases in 1992 to 21 in 2003.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk S. Sothinathan

said one measure taken was amending the National Forestry Act 1984 to

provide stiffer penalties for offenders. Replying to Hashim Jahaya

(BN-Kuala Kedah), he said the authorities collected RM1.46 million in

fines from offenders.
