Playground Pool Dance
By Autumn Grooms, La Crosse Tribune, Wis.
Jul. 10--The disco received applause, and the macarena got a few hips moving. But it took the Hood Park kids leading the "Cupid Shuffle" to get the crowd dancing and singing at the All-City Playground Olympics Water Ballet competition Wednesday at Copeland Park. "I thought we did really good," said Kawana McCloud, 9. "Everyone liked it and was singing along and dancing, too."
The children selected the song by Cupid because it didn't have any bad words in its lyrics and was appropriate for 2-year-old Daylena Buckhanan to dance to, her sister Daisha Buckhanan said.
"Cupid Shuffle" also was a tune that most kids knew from watching the music video on television, Kantrice Marshall, 11, added.
"I like the moves to the dance," said Trenysha Anderson, 8. "I love it."
"Cupid Shuffle" ranks among 10-year-old Victor Booker's favorite dances.
"I think all the kids had a lot of fun dancing," he said.
Hood Park leader Mark Nedset said the kids chose the song Monday and didn't need much practice.
The annual competition drew more than 100 kids representing the La Crosse Park and Recreation Department's seven supervised playgrounds.
The kids also tossed water balloons, completed an obstacle course and raced down water slides, among other activities.
Fun Days happen throughout the summer and are open to children ages 6 to 14 involved in supervised playground.
