BRIEF: Two Still Recovering From Crash That Killed Central Student
By La Crosse Tribune, Wis.
Jul. 10–Two Central High School students remained in a La Crosse hospital Wednesday after an early Tuesday crash in Vernon County that killed a fellow student.
Driver Jacob Wuensch, 17, of Coon Valley, Wis., still is in critical condition at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, while 15-year-old Alyssa Gilbertson of Chaseburg, Wis., was in stable condition. Katelyn “Katie” Beran, 15, of La Crosse died after Wuensch lost control of the vehicle about 7:10 a.m. as it crested a hill on Brinkman Ridge Road in the town of Hamburg, left the road, rolled 3 1/2 times and hit a tree, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department.
Beran was not wearing a seat belt, while the other two were, said sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jim Hanson.
Authorities are looking into whether speed was a factor in the crash. Alcohol was not involved.
Beran’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4141 Mormon Coulee Road. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday. Memorials in her
name can be made to the La Crosse Public Education Foundation.
