Zoltan Kovacs of Sunny Border Nurseries Wins 2008 GrowerTalks Young Grower Award Co-Sponsored By BASF Turf & Ornamentals
Zoltan Kovacs, Vice President of Operations at Sunny Border Nurseries in Kensington, Connecticut, was recognized by BASF Turf & Ornamentals with the 2008 GrowerTalks Young Grower Award at the Ohio Florists Association (OFA) Short Course in Columbus, Ohio, in an awards ceremony Saturday.
Now in its fourth year, the Young Grower Award, which is co-sponsored by BASF, Ball Horticultural Company and the Ohio Florists Association, is open to any grower age 35 or under who submits an essay answering an important industry question. This year’s question was, “What new business qualities will today’s growers need to possess in order to thrive over the next 20 years?” The judging committee narrowed the field down to five finalists, including Kovacs, Ed Barrow, Nancy Gambino, Jill West and Davy Wright.
“Much like the focus on forward-looking solutions and innovation at BASF, these Young Grower Award finalists are moving our industry into the future as they embrace new innovations and technology for continuous improvement,” said Steve Larson, BASF Turf & Ornamentals National Ornamentals Account Manager.
A turf & ornamental professional for more than 30 years, Larson shares his insights on the challenges facing today’s growers on his blog at www.betterplants.com.
Kovacs, a native of Hungary, oversees an $8-million operation on seven locations at Sunny Border Nurseries. His responsibilities include managing on-site staff, along with all growing, propagation, production and plant and hard-good purchases. The nursery produces more than 4 million young plants per year and Kovac manages production of more than 5,000 varieties of perennials, vines, herb and alpines. Within the last four years, Kovacs has helped grow Sunny Border’s temperennial line by more than 400 percent.
