Arsenic Found in Greek Aegean Waters
July 15, 2008
Greek authorities have banned bathing in areas of the eastern province of Attica after tests revealed arsenic in the water.
The source of the toxic chemical was what was only termed a discharge into the sea, with a second round of tests revealing smaller traces of arsenic than the first, said authorities.
Swimming remains prohibited while the Hellenic Center for Marine Research continues look at health impacts, the newspaper Kathimerini reported Tuesday.
The Hellenic Ornithological Society is sending a delegation to inspect several dead birds that have washed up on the shore in recent weeks.
