Officials Reopen Area Beaches After Spill

July 17, 2008

By Brenda Duran

LONG BEACH – Officials lifted beach closures at Alamitos Bay and Colorado Lagoon Wednesday after a weekend 300-gallon raw sewage spill.

The two beaches had been shut down on Sunday evenin g when the sewage spilled into the bay at Mother’s Beach because of a blocked sewer main.

Colorado Lagoon was closed at the time because of its proximity and water flow between two bodies of water.

On Wednesday, laboratory tests results for potentially affected sites in Alamitos Bay were within state standards, officials said.

However, officials issued a separate advisory for Colorado Lagoon due to elevated bacterial levels unrelated to the spill.

Officials are recommending people avoid water contact.
