Tropical Storm Bertha headed east and remained in open Atlantic waters Thursday.
At 11 a.m., the once-hurricane force storm was 390 miles east-northeast of Bermuda and 905 miles south-southwest of Cape Race in Newfoundland, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported. Bertha was moving at 9 mph east-southeast and was expected to turn toward the east and then the northeast and pick up speed on Friday.
Bertha had sustained winds of almost 60 mph with higher gusts. Forecasters said it should remain at about the same strength for the next two days. Tropical storm force winds extended up to 140 miles from the storm center.
Bertha passed close to Bermuda's east coast Monday as a tropical storm and drenched the rain-deprived island. Power failures, minor flooding and downed trees were reported but there was no report of injuries.
