California Drum Circle Ends in Stabbing

Police officials say the future of a traditional La Jolla, Calif., beachside drum circle celebration is in doubt after a stabbing and melee this weekend.
The full-moon event drew nearly 1,000 people Friday night to Black's Beach in La Jolla. A man walking down the beach about 2:30 a.m. Saturday was attacked and stabbed. The victim is expected to survive, but the celebration turned chaotic, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Sunday.
The future of the drum circle, which was started in 1994 by the environmentalist group Rainbow Family, is a matter of speculation now that it has gotten bigger and rowdier than in the past. The Rainbow Family has disowned the drum circle and is urging current participants to hew to its values of peaceful prayer and heart songs.
It was a little more docile and friendly in the past, San Diego lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma told the Union-Tribune. But it's gotten a little bigger, and (they're) not getting the same cooperation from some of the people coming now. The result has been a lot of trash, people urinating and defecating on the beach, illegal fires, drug paraphernalia left behind, glass containers around -- the whole deal.
