PDC Woman Escapes Trailer Fire

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - A Prairie du Chien woman escaped her burning trailer home Saturday night after she was awakened by the popping noise of exploding spray-paint cans.Prairie du Chien firefighters were called at8 p.m. to the home of Renee Hubanks in Selch's Trailer Court at 1515 S. 10th St.Upon arrival, firefighters found the home engulfed, with the fire burning through the roof and the windows blown out."She was lucky to get out," said Harry Rems, Prairie du Chien fire chief.Hubanks wasn't injured, and the family dog also escaped. Hubanks' young son had gone fishing with neighbors and was not home. Rems said the trailer had a smoke detector, but it wasn't working.The structure was a total loss. An end loader and backhoe had to be brought in to clear the site.Rems said he thinks the fire started in the living room, possibly from an electrical cause. Firefighters were at the scene for three hours.
