Research and Markets: Market for Molecular Biology Products Is Contracting in Major European Countries

Posted on: Tuesday, 10 May 2005, 09:00 CDT

DUBLIN, Ireland, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c17153 ) has announced the addition of European Customer Market Survey - Molecular Biology Products to their offering.

The findings of this study suggest that in the major European countries, the market for molecular biology products is contracting. In the UK, single digit growth (8% maximum) is forecasted for the next twelve months. France will have zero growth for the next twelve months. Germany which has in the past been traditionally the largest European market is declining. This economic situation compounded by the fact that there are an excess of suppliers in the market for the bulk of basic molecular biology commodity products means that in the short term price based competition is likely, if not happening already. Longer term, if the economic trend continues, market consolidation by acquisition or exit is predicted. Major Molecular Biology product suppliers such as Sigma and VWR appear are gaining market share in this environment.

A key trend found is that customers, both at the professional purchasing and end user levels are becoming more price sensitive. This is presumably due to the need to maximise spend with limited resources. Price is the main reason for switching suppliers. Customer loyalty to suppliers is centered on a fair price perception coupled to good service provision, particularly product availability and on time delivery.

In an assessment of common molecular biology products for cloning, DNA gel electrophoresis and eukaryotic cell selection, it was found that the majority of end users favour the use of more basic commodity products such restriction enzymes, agarose, standard DNA markers and powdered G418/Geneticin and Hygromycin.

In the majority of cases, there is limited awareness of higher performing cloning technologies. Technical users who are aware perceive little value in these technologies over what they are currently using. More value is seen in products that offer convenience such pre-cast agarose gels, ready made buffers, pre-stained markers, liquid geneticin.

Customer willingness to adopt such offerings would be based on slight premium to same pricing. Revenue opportunities do exist in the market. At the professional purchaser level, most are satisfied with current suppliers. However, if there are improvements in perceived value for money, volume discounts, quality guarantees, customer service and ease of ordering, they will be considered seriously for adoption. At the end user level, customers are willing to switch suppliers for better price deals and will consider bulk purchasing. However the timing of revenue influx needs to be calculated to take into consideration the running down of stocks of previous supplier products and also speed at which new accounts will be adopted. In France the adoption cycle could take up to 6 to 12 months.

The data presented in this report is the result of quantitative opinion derived from 391 individuals involved in the purchase and use of Molecular Biology products in the UK, Germany and France. Opinion was ascertained on two levels, from economic Buyers responsible for purchasing purchase Molecular Biology products and also from technical Buyers, who purchase and use Molecular Biology products.
