Atlanta braced for another round of severe thunderstorms Wednesday after overnight storms left more than 1,000 area residents without electrical power.
Lightning struck several homes in the metro area late Tuesday sparking a number of fires, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Golf ball-sized hail was reported in Gwinnett County where as much as 4 inches of rain fell in a brief period.
The National Weather Service said heavy rains caused the roof of a building in Gainesville to collapse and high winds knocked down trees in seven counties.
Earlier Tuesday lightning strikes triggered five fires in a suburb of Indianapolis.
One family had to evacuate their home in the middle of the night after finding the roof was on fire.
