Coast Guard Halts Search for Missing Fisherman

ATLANTIC CITY The U.S. Coast Guard says it has stopped its active search for the owner and captain of a Rhode Island fishing boat that sank off the New Jersey shore.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for 58-year-old Philip Ruhle at sunset Friday after searching an area larger than the state of Delaware.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman declined to say whether the suspension meant that Ruhle is believed dead.

The 80-foot Sea Breeze was laden with 100,000 pounds of fish when it capsized and then sank about 45 miles east of Atlantic City on Wednesday night, according to officials.

Ruhle was at the wheel, trying to right the ship, when it flipped, according to authorities.

Two crew members Rayford Carr and Anthony Hendrickson spent three hours in the ocean before the Coast Guard rescued them.
