All of Foster to soon have upgraded Internet, TV service
Verizon announces a plan to provide high-speed Internet and digital TV reception to the large section of the town now lacking the two services.

Kids, books, and crunchy ... delights?
This is the 31st year that the state has organized a summer reading program. In recent years, the state has joined in a nationwide summer literacy program, which came up with the "Catch the Reading Bug" theme. Last year's was a mystery theme, "Get a Clue," that was a natural for talks on forensics and police work while next year's, "Be Creative," will focus on the arts.
Brady optimistic he can work with union and council
Less than two weeks into his new job, Providence School Supt. Thomas Brady faced his first baptism by fire: an irate union that was pressuring the City Council to restore teacher assistant positions.
If you're wondering, those are weather balloons
A University of Rhode Island scientist is releasing weather balloons in an effort to document ozone levels in the atmosphere, and will be setting loose another batch tomorrow at 1 p.m. John Merrill, an atmospheric chemist, releases the weather balloons from the URI Bay Campus, on South Ferry Road in Narragansett, each week as part of a research project.
State still able to offer low-interest student loans
The Rhode Island Student Loan Authority, which provides low- interest rate loans to students attending college in Rhode Island and native Rhode Islanders who study elsewhere, is continuing to provide both private and federally backed loans, according to officials at the authority.

Democrat Michael J. Reeves and independent Lisa P. Tomasso qualify for the November ballot. No Republicans returned nominating papers by yesterday's deadline.

Volunteers sought for weight-loss study
The University of Rhode Island's Department of Kinesiology and Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences are looking for 30 volunteers to take part in a 10-week study on weight loss and physical activity. Overweight adults ages 60 to 75 are sought.

Extension to South County bike path is back on track
Delayed by a land swap and questions about who owned a portion of the proposed route, the extension is tentatively scheduled for construction in spring from Wakefield to Narragansett, said Robert Smith, acting chief of design at the state Department of Transportation.

Boundary markers for potter's field are settled
The state Department of Transportation and Carpionato Properties have agreed on the location of granite markers that will identify the sliver of an old state cemetery that is part of a Carpionato- owned property on Sockanosset Cross Road, Cranston.

Seekonk selectmen candidates focus on tax, spending controls
Both candidates -- David F. Viera and Francis M. Cavaco -- vying for a seat on the Board of Selectmen, agree that the town must do more to curb spending and keep Seekonk affordable for families and seniors alike.
