Royal welsh show: Woodland is transformed

Posted on: Wednesday, 23 July 2003, 06:00 CDT

TWO forestry experts who have turned a woodland near Llandovery into a haven for red squirrels and black grouse have won the Forestry Commission's Woods for Wales award. Huw Denman and Phillipe Morgan earned a shield and a cheque for pounds 1,000 for transforming Bryn Arau Duon into what the judges said was "as good an example of sustainable forest management as one might hope to see."

The judges said the labour intensive work on the red squirrels had produced signs of a stabilising or even increasing population, areas of raised bog within the woods had helped the black grouse and they were impressed at the way the two experts had balanced excellent conservation work with their primary objective of producing high quality timber.
