Avenues Rallies for Firefighters

August 1, 2008

The City Creek Canyon fire burned 130 acres, but it never came close to threatening any homes.

That’s why Avenues homeowners came out to thank some of the nearly 200 firefighters who helped completely contain the fire Thursday night.

“This is a way to thank these hard-working crews,” Avenues resident and Democratic candidate for governor Bob Springmeyer said of the informal rally at 11th Avenue Park. “That’s hard, dirty work. All it takes is a little shift of wind for things to go wrong.”

The fire started Tuesday and was contained on Thursday by 7 p.m., said Jason Curry, spokesman for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

A 20-man crew will monitor the fire today, he said.

Fire investigators also will be out today, trying to determine what sparked the blaze. So far, there are few clues, Curry said.

“They’ll be gridding out an area looking for evidence and interviewing people in the area that might have seen anything,” he said.

With no lightning in the area when the fire started, investigators believe the fire was human caused. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 801-538-7302.
