Some Residents Allowed Home After Fire
Some evacuees were allowed to return to their homes as crews worked to control fires that spread through California's Sierra terrain, officials said.
About 100 homes near the towns of Mariposa and Midpines were restricted Thursday but fire crews said they were hopeful residents would be allowed back in their homes in the near future, the Los Angeles Times reported.I think we are feeling good, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Suzanne Grin told the Times.
About 4,500 firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which was started last week by a local taking part in target practice close to the Merced Rive. Officials said the fire consumed 21 homes and forced thousands of people to leave the area.
The Times said nearly half of the 53-square-mile fire was under control Thursday.
