Beggar’s Night Set in Tipp City

August 2, 2008

TIPP CITY — Deciding when to hold Beggar’s Night continues to haunt the City Council, which again debated the options July 21, before settling on Oct. 30.

By a 4-2 vote, the council chose the Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. for kids to hit the streets for Halloween door-to- door visits for treats.

In Miami County the County Council, a group of representatives from jurisdictions across the county, each year recommends a uniform date trick or treat activities. This year it is Oct. 30.

Tipp City used to go along, but in the past couple of years had decided on Oct. 31.

Because Oct. 31 falls on Friday this year, Mayor Tim Evans worries about more people being out, including some who may have stopped for a drink following work, and others who just may not be home yet for the beggars.

“A number of us sat up here and said it should be on Halloween,” Council President Pat Hale said.

Some wanted to set Beggar’s Night for Oct. 31 permanently. Evans asked about conflicts with church activities when the date falls on Wednesday.

Councilman Bill Beagle said the community is confused why Beggar’s Night isn’t always on Halloween. However, he thinks they will understand why a Friday or Saturday night would be avoided.

“Friday and Saturdays just bring something out in people,” Beagle said.

The council also:

– Heard concerns from resident Phyllis Hale about what she sees as the need to replace trees, better care for existing trees and plant grass in areas of the city park. She also expressed concern about condition of grills in the park.

– Agreed to file nuisance abatement action in the Miami County courts against properties at 30 German St. and 36 Regency Square.

– Gave initial consideration to an ordinance assessing property owners for weed and grass cut by a city contractor after orders for cutting were not followed. The ordinance was amended to exclude from the assessment those who bought the properties after the cutting was done.
