Tallapoosa River Cleanup Scheduled for Saturday

Aug. 7–A Renew Our Rivers celebration and cleanup project is scheduled for noon Saturday near Heflin on the Tallapoosa River.
Volunteers can bring their own boat or borrow one from Tallapoosa River Outfitters at no cost, owner Lex Brown said. He said volunteers will meet at Tallapoosa River Outfitters, 9891 Alabama Highway 46, and be shuttled to the river.
Volunteers then will float down the river and pick up trash as they go along.
There will be a hotdog cookout, and live music from local guitarist John Howle will follow the cleanup.
Brown said this will be the second year for the cleanup. Last year more than 9,000 pounds of trash, mostly old tires exposed by shallow water from the drought, was recovered from the river, he said. About 100 people came out last year, he said.
“We don’t have a trashy river, but we can always clean it up better than it is,” Brown said.
Brown said there will be giveaways at the event, which is sponsored by Alabama Power and Fox 6, and supported by local groups and officials.
For more information, call Brown at (256) 239-6399 or Heflin City Clerk Cindy Beam at (256) 463-2290.
