Preying for Wildlife at the Zoo
By Pol Omuiri
If it is a wet Thursday, it must be a family trip to Belfast Zoo. Naturally, most of the animals had the good sense to keep themselves out of the rain. Only the homo sapiens were silly enough to expose themselves to the wet and the wind of blustery Bellevue.
One lion looked at us from the shelter of his lair and I swear he felt sorry for us for being on the other side of the fence. Still, we did get a glimpse at some African Wild Dogs and the bears did not seem to mind the watery conditions. Funnily enough, however, the most spectacular animal moment of the whole day was provided by a kestrel quartering high over Cave Hill.
My son and I were transfixed as the bird rode the high winds and ignored the rain in its search for prey. Nice to see that the local wildlife can still hold their own against the exotic imports.
