New Survey Finds Coloradoans Support Increased Access to Domestic Oil and Natural Gas Resources

Posted on: Tuesday, 12 August 2008, 12:00 CDT

DENVER, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Coloradoans are concerned about the price of gasoline and the majority of them support increased access to domestic oil and natural gas resources, a new survey finds.

"These new numbers for Colorado validate other recent national polling information and helps underscore what we already know - people nationwide, including here, in Colorado, support increasing our nation's supplies of oil and natural gas," said Stan Dempsey, president of the Colorado Petroleum Association (CPA). "Despite these numbers and the recent wave of public support, Congress remains in the way of creating comprehensive energy policy with all options on the table, including development of domestic resources, more conservation, and energy efficiency and using all energy sources."

The poll was conducted by telephone between July 10 and July 22, 2008, by Harris Interactive and commissioned by API. The survey of 501 registered Colorado voters who are likely to vote in the upcoming presidential election found 67 percent of those surveyed said they somewhat or strongly support increased access to domestic oil and natural gas resources. Only 20 percent of respondents said they opposed increased access. An overwhelming 95 percent said they are somewhat or very concerned about the price of gasoline.

"In Colorado and elsewhere, America's oil and natural gas companies stand ready to collaborate with all levels of government to pass a balanced energy plan that increases domestic supplies while safeguarding the environment," said Dempsey. "Now is the time for Congress to ease restrictions on non-park, non-wilderness federal lands out West, and lift the ban on offshore drilling."

Currently, Congress is blocking the exploration and development of abundant oil and natural gas reserves beneath non-park federal lands and coastal waters. Advanced technology means America's oil and natural gas companies can efficiently explore for these resources while protecting the environment. Based on federal government data, these resources could provide enough oil to fuel more than 65 million cars for 60 years and enough natural gas to heat 60 million homes for 160 years.
