Copy of Declaration is at Utah Capitol

August 15, 2008

A rare copy of the Declaration of Independence will be coming to Salt Lake this weekend.

The copy of the Declaration was printed the night of the document’s signing by the Continental Congress, July 4, 1776. It was one of hundreds printed to distribute throughout the colonies.

Only 25 of these copies remain. This copy, which is owned by television producer Norman Lear, was previously on display in Salt Lake during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

This year, the touring document is paired with a voter registration drive. It will be on display in the Rotunda of the Utah State Capitol today and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
